I've been on a 2 year mission to find a great sounding portable Bluetooth speaker. It's been a difficult task because Bluetooth audio quality is inherently terrible. There are literally dozens of the these little speakers on the market now, with more being released every week it seems. I've personally tested about 15 of them. It's obvious that most of these devices put function over performance. Some focus on size, some on features, some on battery life. Others simply rely on their brand name (I'm looking at you, Beats Pill). I had yet to find one that really focused on sound quality, then JBL release the Flip.

The Flip blew away everything else out there in terms of sound quality. The Bluetooth range was terrible, the battery life was poor, and the speaker phone was less than stellar, but it actually sounded great. The quasi-successor to the Flip is the Charge. JBL refined the design a bit, fixed the BT range, and took away the speakerphone. In turn they tripled the battery life, added a bass port, and made it slightly larger. The difference is amazing. The best sounding device got even better. The Charge is richer, warmer, and louder than the Flip.

If there is one downside to the Charge its is the fifty dollar price increase from the Flip. I assume this is largely due to the massive battery they used to accommodate the USB charging port. Personally, I love the extended playtime of the device and will most likely never use the USB port to charge anything, but it's nice if I ever need it in a pinch.

The Charge works magic with the sub-par audio quality that Bluetooth offers. If you're in the market for one of these portable BT speakers and sound quality is your main concern, look no further. This is as good as it gets.
